A molecular gas phase in the Cold Neutral Medium ?

چکیده

I examine the possibility that the Cold Neutral Medium of the interstellar medium in galaxies contains a molecular gas phase that may represent a significant and even the dominant amount of its mass in metal-poor regions. In spiral galaxies such regions are found at large galactocentric distances where diffuse H2 gas will be untraceable through its feeble 12CO J=1–0 emission, the very lack of it being also responsible its higher kinetic temperatures (Tk ∼ 60 − 100 K). Sensitive sub-mm imaging of spiral galaxies has demonstrated the existence of dust well inside their HI gas distribution while recent observational work suggests a high H2 formation rate from HI association onto grains. The latter is indeed a critical unknown and a high value can easily compensate for the reduction of the available grain surface in the metal-poor environments giving rise to a CO-poor, diffuse H2 phase that may then contribute significantly to the mass and pressure of the interstellar medium in such environments.

Dynamical Formation of the Dark Molecular Hydrogen Clouds around Diffuse H II Regions

We examine the triggering process of molecular cloud formation around diffuse H II regions. We calculate the time evolution of the shell as well as of the H II region in a two-phase neutral medium, solving the UV and FUV radiative transfer, the thermal and chemical processes in the time-dependent hydrodynamics code. In the cold neutral medium, the ambient gas is swept up in the cold (T ∼ 30− 40...

Neutral Atomic Phases of the ISM in the Galaxy

Much of the interstellar medium in disk galaxies is in the form of neutral atomic hydrogen, H I. This gas can be in thermal equilibrium at relatively low temperatures, T < ∼ 300 K (the cold neutral medium, or CNM) or at temperatures somewhat less than 10 K (the warm neutral medium, or WNM). These two phases can coexist over a narrow range of pressures, Pmin ≤ P ≤ Pmax. We determine Pmin and Pma...

Spiral shocks and the formation of molecular clouds in a two phase medium

We extend recent numerical results (Dobbs et al. 2006) on molecular cloud formation in spiral galaxies by including a multi-phase medium. The addition of a hot phase of gas enhances the structure in the cold gas, and significantly increases the fraction of molecular hydrogen that is formed when the cold gas passes through a spiral shock. The difference in structure is reflected in the mass powe...

Direct Evidence of Cold Gas in Dla 0812+32b

We present the first direct evidence for cold gas in a high redshift DLA galaxy. We measured several multiplets of weak neutral carbon (C I ) transitions in order to perform a curve of growth analysis. A ∆χ test constrains the best fit Doppler parameter, b = 0.33 −0.04km s −1 , and logN(C I) = 13.30±0.2 cm. This Doppler parameter constrains the kinetic temperature of the gas to T ≤ 78 K (T ≤ 11...

Incorporating the molecular gas phase in galaxy - size numerical simulations : first applications in dwarf galaxies

We present models of the coupled evolution of the gaseous and stellar content of galaxies using a hybrid N-body/hydrodynamics code, a Jeans mass criterion for the onset of star formation from gas, while incorporating for the first time the formation of H2 out of HI gas as part of such a model. We do so by formulating a subgrid model for gas clouds that uses well-known cloud scaling relations an...
